2020 became productive for Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia - Natalia Gherman

Bishkek, Jan. 6, 2021 / Kabar /. 2020 was productive for the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Central Asia, Head of the UNRCCA Natalia Gherman told in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) speaking about the important events and achievements of 2020.

She noted that the previous year, despite the challenges faced by humanity, was full of important events.

“We actively continued our activities in cooperation with all the countries of Central Asia and neighboring Afghanistan,” Natalia Gherman said at the press conference devoted to the results of work of the UNRCCA.

Highly assessing the level of cooperation between the countries of Central Asia in the political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres, the head of the UNRCCA noted that the Central Asian countries supported all the UN initiatives, in particular those aimed at eliminating the consequences of the global pandemic.

Natalia Gherman also paid particular attention to the results of the International Conference in Ashgabat dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Turkmenistan's neutrality and plans to promote peace, security and development in Central Asia in 2021.

The head of UNRCCA stressed that the policy of neutrality calls for the use of preventive diplomacy mechanisms, which is one of the main functions of the UN in conflict prevention and peacebuilding processes.

Natalia Gherman emphasized the importance of the UN General Assembly resolution, initiated by the President of Turkmenistan, on declaring 2021 the International Year of Peace and Trust.

“For us, the International Year of Peace and Confidence is an effective way to mobilize the international community to work to build peace and confidence in relations between states, in particular through political dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation in order to achieve sustainable peace, solidarity and harmony,” she added.

The event, organized by UNRCCA, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, was attended by representatives of the media, journalists accredited in Turkmenistan, as well as the foreign press via videoconference.
