Brussels, Nov. 23, 2018. / Kabar /. 40 countries joined as co-sponsors to the adopted resolution of the European Union on the role of the international community in the threat of uranium tailings in Central Asia, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, Chingiz Aidarbekov told reporters.
He said that such an achievement is truly a success, and this indicates that the correct consultations were held.
“The European Union, through the EBRD, has set up a fund for uranium tailings. According to experts, more than $ 80 million is needed to solve the problem. $ 26 million has already been allocated. After the conference was held in London on November 8, we received the support of several other states,” he noted.
In addition, speaking about the support from the European Union, Aidarbekov noted that €193 million had been intended for the indicative program for 2014-2020, but today this figure has been increased by the European Union to almost €300 million.
“This shows that there are results in our country,” the minister added.
There are 7 uranium tailings in Central Asia, of which 3 are in Kyrgyzstan.
