30 schools to be built and reconstructed in Kyrgyzstan within ERIK project

Bishkek, Jan. 12, 2022. / Kabar /. The list of 30 schools for reconstruction and construction within the framework of the ERIK project was approved following a meeting of an interdepartmental working group, the Ministry of Education of Kyrgyzstan reported.

This list includes schools from all regions of the country. 14 of the selected schools are emergency schools that must be demolished and rebuilt. Almost all of them have not undergone major repairs for a long time; these schools are unsafe in terms of seismic stability. Many of them function without internal toilets, the report said.

Selected educational institutions will undergo major reconstruction and construction, taking into account the requirements of seismic safety and energy efficiency, water supply, sanitation and hygiene systems will be improved, including the construction of internal toilets.

Within the framework of the ERIK (Enhancing Resilience in Kyrgyzstan) project, funded by the World Bank, support is provided to the government of the Kyrgyz Republic in creating a safe educational environment. To date, work is already underway to prepare design documents for the construction and reconstruction of 10 schools located in the most earthquake-prone regions of Kyrgyzstan.

The interdepartmental working group includes representatives of government agencies and experts in the construction sector. The selection of educational institutions was carried out in several stages and on the basis of criteria developed by the World Bank and agreed with the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The selection took into account such parameters as the seismicity of the building site, its structural type and degree of vulnerability, school occupancy and cost efficiency to increase resilience to natural disasters, the Ministry of Education said.
