Bishkek, April 6, 2021 . / Kabar/ . The Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Kyrgyz Republic, together with the World Health Organization (WHO), released a new study assessing the experience and perceptions of COVID-19 among the population of Kyrgyzstan.
This study was conducted with technical and financial support from WHO and USAID and was conducted in three phases from December 2020 to February 2021, the press service of the Kyrgyz Health Ministry reported.
Data were collected through Computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI), in which 1,000 people from all seven oblasts of Kyrgyzstan and the two main cities of Bishkek and Osh were interviewed in each data collection phase.
"The study is important because it helps us understand people's willingness to be vaccinated. We need to understand that vaccination today is one of the main protective measures capable of controlling the pandemic and ensuring the reduction of new and fatal cases," WHO Representative in Kyrgyzstan Nazira Artykova said.
"Such behavioral studies will help build effective measures to combat COVID-19, as well as identify key points of influence on people's behavior and relevant channels of information dissemination. The results of the study will lead to changes in the communication strategy on vaccination," Bakyt Dzhangaziyev, the Deputy Minister of Health of the republic noted.
According to the survey, 55% of the population of Kyrgyzstan expressed a strong willingness or some desire to be vaccinated.
In addition, slightly more than half consider themselves well informed about the vaccine (52%) and understand vaccine recommendations (54%).
Lower levels of health literacy can be noted compared to Stages 1 and 2. The awareness of the Kyrgyz population on what to do if they suspect COVID-19 decreased from 69% to 63%, and the percentage of those who can find the necessary information decreased from 64% to 59%.
