558 people convicted for extremism are held in prisons in Kyrgyzstan

The number of convicts for extremist crimes in prisons of Kyrgyzstan is 558 people, head of the Legal Support Department of the State Service for Punishments Execution of the Kyrgyz Republic Aivaz Kadyrov told at the Central Asian Dialogue on Effective Prison Management of Violent Extremist and Terrorist Offenders held in Bishkek.

According to his data, 96 of them are in investigatory jails, 164 in closed institutions, 206 in colonies of settlements and 16 people were sentenced to life imprisonment.

“92 people are registered in the penitentiary inspection. The main category of convicts for extremist crimes are mainly Uzbeks and Kyrgyz, etc. All of them are from the countries of the former Soviet Union who are connected by one mentality, practically in one language. By gender, the majority of those convicted of extremism are men, the other 13 are women,” said Kadyrov.

According to him, the bulk of the term of serving under a court sentence is from 5 to 10 years.
