Osh, Nov. 13, 2018. /Kabar/. Especially valuable tree types - walnut, pistachio and almond - were planted in forestlands of Toktogul, Aksy and Karakul regions of Jalal-Abad oblast.
The total area where the trees were planted is 94 hectares of land. For reforestation, UNDP provided technical support by purchasing planting material and related tools. In addition, materials have recently been handed over to the forestry establishements to install a fence around the territories of the forest plantation.
Restoration of degraded forests brings several benefits - increasing biodiversity, combating the effects of climate change, generating economic benefits. Forest degradation is a direct threat to the snow leopard, as the population of wild ungulates and small mammals that make up its food base is decreasing.
Reforestation work is carried out jointly with the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry under the Kyrgyz Government with the involvement of local communities in the framework of the UNDP-GEF project entitled “Conservation of Globally Important Biodiversity and Associated Land and Forest Resources of Western Tian Shan Forest Mountain Ecosystems to Support Sustainable Livelihoods”.
