Bishkek, Aug. 28, 2018. /Kabar/. A new project in the sphere of agriculture - Access to Markets - has been launched in Kyrgyzstan, the Agriculture Projects Implementation Units of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Agriculture, Food Industry and Melioration reported.
A round-table was held yesterday in Bishkek with the participation of all concerned sides – there were more than 80 representatives of agrobusinesses, agricultural producers, banks, state entities, donor and non-governmental organizations.
The project is aimed at providing comprehensive support for selected added-value chains for animal products in all areas and while entering markets, and is to be implemented throughout the state for five years.
The main executing institutions of the project are the Kyrgyz Ministry of Agriculture, Food Industry and Melioration (through the Agricultural Projects Implementation Unit), State Inspectorate for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Safety, Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund (RKDF), Community Development and Investment Agency (ARIS), financial institutions of the country, and scientific-research and other organizations, involved in the sector.
The project consists of three components:
1. Development of added-value chains for animal products
2. Financing added-value chains for animal products
3. Modernization of the sanitary system of live stock breeding in Kyrgyzstan.
The Access to Markets Project is a subsequent continuation of the Live stock Breeding and Market Development Project - phases 1 and 2 (2013 – 2019), financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and implemented in five oblasts of the country: Issyk-Kul, Naryn, Osh, Jalal-Abad, Batken.
Its launching was dictated by the need to solve pressing issues, which became more acute after Kyrgyzstan joined Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). Membership in this organization not only provided new opportunities for agricultural producers in selling their products, but also was a driving force to address current problems more actively.
The overall worth of the project is $55.4 million. Loan and grant finances of IFAD amount to $25.4 million, contribution of financial services providers - $20 million, contribution of beneficiaries – more than $8 million and contribution of the government - $1.6 million.
It is expected that the project will cover 28 000 rural households and about 34 000 farmers, entrepreneurs, unemployed young people and veterinarian-zootechnicians. As a result of the project’s implementation, sales of the target audience will grow by at least 30%, exports of animal products will increase by 10% and minimum 2 800 permanent jobs will be created.
Law on the ratification of the agreement between Kyrgyzstan and IFAD on financing the Access to Markets Project was signed by the President of Kyrgyzstan on April 24, 2018.
