Bishkek, Dec. 1, 2020. /Kabar/. Acting President of Kyrgyzstan, Speaker of the Parliament Talant Mamytov received on Tuesday Health Minister of the country Alymkadyr Beishenaliyev and Director of the Republic AIDS Centre of the Health Ministry Umutkan Chokmorova.
According to the press service of the Kyrgyz president, the meeting took place on the occasion of the World AIDS Day which is celebrated annually on Dec. 1.
Alymkadyr Beyshenaliyev presented information on current activities of the ministry, the work being done on treatment of patients with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis, as well as the ongoing sanitary and preventive work in this direction.
According to the minister, the outlined approach to infection control from a public health perspective, which is included in the Program to overcome HIV infection in Kyrgyzstan for 2017-2021, provides HIV prevention, health maintenance and increase in life expectancy of people with HIV.
He noted that coverage of antiretroviral therapy, which is also prevention of HIV transmission, has doubled in the country in recent years.
Umutkan Chokmorova informed that according to the latest research almost half of HIV/AIDS cases are transmitted through sexual contact - 49% and parenteral routes - 43%. Among those infected 64% are men, women - 36%, respectively.
According to the RC AIDS under the Kyrgyz Health Ministry, this year the country applied for a Global Fund grant to support HIV and tuberculosis programs for the period 2021-2023. In accordance with the decision of the Board of the Global Fund, a grant of more than USD 11 million was approved to Kyrgyzstan to increase government contributions to HIV and tuberculosis programs.
It was also noted that significant efforts are under way in the country to reduce tuberculosis morbidity and mortality. 5096 cases of first-time tuberculosis were registered in 2019, which made 78.9 cases per 100,000 people, while during the same period of 2018 there were 5,249 cases - 83 cases per 100,000 people.
Minister Beyshenaliev reported on work being done to prevent viral hepatitis. For this purpose, the budget of the Ministry of Health for 2021 envisaged KGS 10 million for the purchase of antiviral drugs.
Acting President Talant Mamytov noted that in addition to combating coronavirus infection, government agencies should pay close attention to other viral diseases.
"Public awareness is one of the most important components in the fight against diseases. In addition, HIV-infected people should be paid special attention, they should feel the support of the state. State authorities need to develop a unified plan of measures to combat HIV/AIDS," said Mamytov, adding in conclusion that special attention should also be paid to the detection of cases of infection.
