Bishkek, Apr. 8, 2019. /Kabar/. On 5 April 2019, ADB met with over 100 students at Kyrgyz State Technical University named after I. Razzakov to identify, discuss and address the key clean energy challenges under the theme “Towards a Clean Energy Future” to promote clean energy in the Kyrgyz Republic, the ADB Resident Mission in Kyrgyzstan reported.
Technology and innovation can play a significant role in Asia and the Pacific’s push towards a low-carbon energy future, with the potential to provide countries, such as the Kyrgyz Republic, access to cleaner and more affordable energy sources and contribute to incremental economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Topics discussed were future energy innovations such as energy efficient buildings, renewable energy in urban settings, decentralized power grids, health and environmental benefits of energy efficiency, new business models and career prospects in the sector including creation of “green” jobs.
Ms. Candice McDeigan, Country Director, ADB Kyrgyz Republic Resident Mission, Mr. Sohail Hasnie, ADB Principal Energy Specialist, Mr. Alex Ablaza Energy Efficiency expert led the discussion which was moderated by Ms. Raya Sultanalieva, Vice-Rector for Research and External Relations of the Kyrgyz State Technical University with contributions from Ms. Tagjana Aidaralieva, press-secretary of OJSC “Electric Power Plants”.
Energy security is a top priority for the Kyrgyz Republic. ADB has been actively engaged with the government to support this through modernizing communication systems and rehabilitating major substations and key hydropower plants such as Toktogul HPP leading to improvements in system’s reliability enabling reductions in power losses. This year, the government, with ADB support will develop the power sector master plan to lay out a energy sector road map for the country.
