Akylbek Zhaparov holds negotiations with leadership of World Bank Group

Bishkek, April 17, 2024. / Kabar/. Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers - Head of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic Akylbek Zhaparov, as part of a working visit to Washington (USA), held negotiations with the leadership of the World Bank Group.

Thus, the head of the Cabinet met with Antonella Bassani, Vice President of the World Bank for Europe and Central Asia.

The main subject of the negotiations was the current state and prospects for cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the World Bank in the fields of healthcare, education, social protection, water supply and irrigation, energy, renewable energy sources, and green economy.

The chairman of the Cabinet drew his interlocutor's attention to the issues of providing the population with water and energy resources, noting the existence of this problem not only in the Kyrgyz Republic, but also in the countries of Central Asia.

In this context, according to Akylbek Zhaparov, “the construction of Kambarata HPP-1 will bring the most positive effect not only to Kyrgyzstan, but also to the entire Central Asian region.”

He also added that the Kyrgyz Republic, in order to mobilize resources for the construction of this HPP-1, plans to hold an investment forum in the city of Vienna with the participation of international partners and financial institutions.

In turn, Antonella Bassani noted the significant capabilities of the Kyrgyz Republic in the production and export of clean and renewable electricity and confirmed the World Bank’s readiness to support Kyrgyzstan’s initiatives as part of the global climate change agenda.

Further, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Akylbek Zhaparov met with Managing Director for Operations of the World Bank Anna Bjerde.

“The World Bank is not only our reliable partner, but also a close friend of Kyrgyzstan, which is always ready to “lender a shoulder of support” and provides very significant assistance to Kyrgyzstan in all key areas of development,” said the head of the Cabinet of Ministers, noting that Kyrgyzstan resolutely continues to implement the whole range of economic reforms aimed at improving the well-being of our population.

In this context, the chairman of the Cabinet informed those present about the indicators of economic growth of the republic, which over the past three years amounted to an average of almost 7%.

The parties also discussed issues of climate change, energy balance, as well as the joint implementation of water-energy, agricultural and agri-food projects.

At the end of these meetings, the signing ceremony of the following bilateral documents took place:

- Agreement between the Kyrgyz Republic and the International Development Association to provide the Kyrgyz Republic with financing for the implementation of the project “Development of Sustainable Agri-Food Clusters” in the amount of US$35 million;

- Agreement between the Kyrgyz Republic and the International Development Association on the issue of the second additional financing for the “Sustainable Development of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project” in the amount of US$ 7.64 million, financed by the World Bank.
