Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to Turkey visits Memorial in memory of Kyrgyz soldiers in Iznik

Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Republic of Turkey Ibrahim Zhunusov took part in a traditional event organized by the Kyrgyz Society of Culture and Friendship in Istanbul at the Mausoleum Kirgyzlar Turbesi in Iznik, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

The event was attended by Consul General of the Kyrgyz Republic in Istanbul, E.Sopokov, Mayor of Isnyk O. Sargyn, head of the district administration of Iznik A.H. Pehlivan, as well as about 300 citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic, who live and study in Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa.

Greeting Kyrgyz compatriots, Ambassador Zhunusov noted the importance of perpetuating and preserving the memory of Kyrgyz soldiers who played a special role in the events that took place on the territory of modern Turkey.

İznik, also known by its ancient name Nicaea, is a town on the eastern shores of Lake İznik, in northwestern Turkey, located 120 km. south of Istanbul. On the territory of the modern city of Iznik at the intersection of three roads there is a kumboz known to local residents as Kyrgyzlar Türbessi or a Memorial to the memory of Kyrgyz soldiers who fell in battles for the capture of this city at the beginning of the second millennium. In October, 2004 the monument of the Kyrgyz baatyr was erected at the Mausoleum.

During the program, a prayer was read at the mausoleum in memory of the Kyrgyz, who died in the battles for the capture of this city. In addition, a picnic was organized and national sports games were held, as well as national dishes were prepared.
