Ashgabat to meet 5th Indoor and Martial Art Games in September

Ashgabat 2017 monorail ready to take to the skies

With the countdown on to the start of the historic Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in September, some of the factors that are going to make the Games a hugely memorable occasion are already falling into place.

If one takes a look inside the iconic Ashgabat Olympic Complex, one of the first things that will strike you is the impressive monorail system that snakes its way across the 54-hectare property.

The new system, which is 5.1km in length and stands high above the ground, is supported by mammoth beams of varying heights from six to 13 metres, and is a true sight to behold.

Not only does the monorail connect all 30 stadia and other infrastructure within the Ashgabat Olympic Complex, it also provides a comfortable and fun method for athletes and officials to move effortlessly between different venues during the 12 days of competition in September.

The monorail train, which consists of four compartments, is designed to accommodate a total of 75 passengers. Although it can attain a top speed of 70km per hour, its highest cruising speed during Games-time will be 46km per hour.

Going at this speed, the train will be able to complete the eight-station circuit in 17 minutes. Three trains, which can transport up to 810 passengers every hour, will run simultaneously during Ashgabat 2017.

The entire Ashgabat Olympic Complex is situated on both sides of Ataturk Street. To create an effortless crossing between the two sides, engineers built two beautiful bridges, giving them Ashgabat’s architectural characteristics, and let the monorail pass through.

This is indeed an artistic touch, as passengers sitting inside the train will enjoy an amazing view of the busy streets below them.

The construction of the monorail began in June 2012 and has recently been completed. Two companies were involved in building the entire system, with Polimeks producing the rails, and Intamin Swiss Company supplying the trains.

The Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games are the fifth edition of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, and will take place in Turkmenistan from 17 to 27 September 2017.

There will be 21 sports at Ashgabat 2017 across 15 venues over 12 days of competition. The 21 sports are 3x3 Basketball, Belt Wrestling, Billiard Sports, Bowling, Chess, DanceSport, Equestrian Jumping, Futsal, Indoor Athletics, Indoor Tennis, Ju-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Kurash, Muay, Sambo, Short Course Swimming, Taekwondo, Track Cycling Traditional Wrestling, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Ashgabat was awarded the Games by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in 2010. The 5th AIMAG Executive Committee will organise and run the Games in cooperation with the OCA.
