Bishkek, July 10, 2024. / Kabar/. A round table on Kyrgyzstan’s accession to the Singapore Convention on Mediation took place in Bishkek.
The event was attended by Minister of Justice Ayaz Bayetov, representatives of the presidential administration, parliament, ministries, departments, international organizations and civil society. In December 2018, the UN General Assembly adopted a convention on international settlement agreements arising from mediation (“Singapore Convention on Mediation”).
The Convention applies to international settlement agreements arising from mediation and entered into by parties to resolve a commercial dispute and provides a harmonized framework for the enforcement and application of international settlement agreements.
At the event, it was noted that Kyrgyzstan supports mediation and promotes its development, including by joining the Singapore Convention on Mediation.
To support the initiative, the EBRD, together with IDLO and in close cooperation with the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic, is implementing a technical assistance project. The objectives of the project include supporting the process of signing and ratifying the Convention, helping to develop the necessary domestic legislation, raising awareness and building consensus to ensure the successful implementation of the convention in Kyrgyzstan.
At the event, key aspects of accession to the convention were discussed, an overview of international experience in accession and implementation of the Singapore Convention in various jurisdictions was presented, areas for improving the legislative and institutional framework of mediation in Kyrgyzstan were identified, and the concept of national mediation reform was presented.
