Assistant to UN Secretary General: Kyrgyzstan makes tangible contribution to conservation of snow leopard

BISHKEK, Aug. 23, 2017 / Kabar /. President Almazbek Atambayev received Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Assistant Administrator of the United Nations Development Program, Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS Cihan Sultanoglu.

During the meeting, the sides discussed the issues of cooperation between the country and the UN system and prospects for further cooperation, including in the context of implementing the long-term sustainable development strategy of Kyrgyzstan for the period up to 2040, keeping tune with the global goals of sustainable development, and the Taza Koom digital transformation program.

The sides also discussed the results of UN Secretary General António Gutteres’s visit to Kyrgyzstan.

Atambayev thanked Sultanoglu for coming to Kyrgyzstan to participate in the International Snow Leopard & Ecosystem Forum, expressing the hope that this forum will contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in the range countries.

Sultanoglu said that UNDP will support the forum, and stressed that Kyrgyzstan, which is launching this event for the second time, makes a tangible contribution not only to the conservation of the snow leopard, but also to mitigating the effects of climate change in the world.

She also said that during the years of Atambayev's presidency the progress in social and economic development of Kyrgyzstan, strengthening of democracy, holding of fair elections, the rule of law, fighting corruption and peace-building is noticeable.

"You leave behind a good legacy," Sultanoglu said.

The International Snow Leopard & Ecosystem Forum will be held in Kyrgyzstan n August 24-25.
