Bishkek, Sept. 18, 2017 / Kabar /. President Almazbek Atambayev will take part in the work of the 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. During the visit, the head of state will deliver a speech at the debate of the General Assembly, the main deliberative body of the United Nations. The theme of the current debate is "With an emphasis on man: in striving to ensure peace and a dignified life for all on a viable planet".
Atambayev will also attend a special high-level meeting on uranium heritage issues in Central Asian countries. This event is held at the initiative of Kyrgyzstan, the European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, where problems of existing uranium tailings, measures for their reclamation and prevention of radiation threat in the republic and the Central Asian region as a whole will be discussed.
In 2013, the UN General Assembly, at the initiative of Kyrgyzstan, adopted a special resolution No. 68/218, which made it possible to make significant progress in technical preparation for the reclamation of uranium objects, conduct studies on assessing their environmental impact, and establish specific financing mechanisms.
During the planned special meeting, Atambayev will bring to the attention of the international community the information on the achievements of Kyrgyzstan in solving this problem, and will discuss with the international partners further areas of support and priority cooperation measures, including the need to adopt a new relevant resolution of the UN General Assembly.
Also, the Kyrgyz president will attend a high-level meeting held by the United Nations Development Program and the UN Peacebuilding Support Office on the theme: "The goals of sustainable development in action: led and owned by the country." During this special meeting, the Head of State will tell about a number of measures taken and the experience of Kyrgyzstan in innovative approaches to implementing the Agenda for Sustainable Development until 2030.
In the framework of his participation in the UN General Assembly, Atambayev will hold a meeting with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
In addition, Atambayev will meet with representatives of large multinational companies in the USA such as: Citi, Visa, Baker McKenzie, General Electric, Microsoft, John Deere, Oppenheimer & Co, AGCOCorporation, APAICS, CalatravaGrace, USEXIMBank, Mirae Asset Global Investments, etc .
