Bishkek, Aug. 2, 2024 . / Kabar / . The first autologous bone marrow transplant in Kyrgyzstan will be performed on a 14-year-old patient from Osh Oblast who suffers from Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Sultan Stambekov, the head of the Department of Pediatric Oncology and Oncohematology of the National Center for Maternal and Child Health of the Kyrgyz Republic noted that there was no such selection of patients.
The patient must have certain indications for autologous bone marrow transplantation. The procedure is performed after a certain treatment protocol," he said.
"First, the patient receives treatment aimed at destroying the affected cells. Then certain medications are administered to prevent recurrence of the disease. Next, if there are sufficient numbers, stem cells are extracted from the blood and frozen. After that, high-dose chemotherapy is administered to destroy the residual affected cells. Finally, healthy stem cells that have been frozen are injected back into the patient," Stambekov explained.
Autologous transplantation is a type of transplant in which the patient's own hematopoietic cells contained in bone marrow, peripheral or umbilical cord blood are transplanted.
The success of transplantation depends on the activity of the disease itself (remission status) and the physical condition of the patient (age, comorbidities, functional status of major organs and systems).
