Bishkek, Jan.17, 2020. /Kabar/. The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Kyrgyzstan hosted the event, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of tragic events of Jan. 20, 1990.
Public figures and intellectuals, heads and representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in the Kyrgyz Republic, university rectors, representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora and media representatives attended the event.
A photo exhibition reflecting the events of Black January, and a collection of information on this tragedy was presented to the participants.
At the beginning of the event, documentary film about the January events was shown.
The memory of the victims of the tragedy was honoured with a minute of silence and prayers were recited from the Holy Quran.
Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Kyrgyzstan Hidayat Orujov made a speech.
"Jan. 20 has been inscribed in the memory of our people as a page of sorrow and grief. On the night of Jan. 19-20, 1990, new history of Azerbaijan was written with blood of martyrs. Though 30 years passed from the day of this tragedy, what happened is not forgotten and is forever written in memory of our people", the ambassador said.
Black January, also known as Black Saturday or the January Massacre, was a violent crackdown on a civilian population of Baku on 19–20 Jan. 1990, pursuant to a state of emergency during the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
According to official estimates 147 Azerbaijani civilians were killed, 800 people were injured and five people went missing.
