DUSHANBE (TCA) — Belarus’ Minsk province intends to access the market of Afghanistan with Tajikistan's assistance. The issue was discussed at a meeting in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, between Minsk Oblast (province) Governor Aleksandr Turchin and Ambassador of Tajikistan to Belarus Mahmadsharif Hakdod on March 2, Belarus’ BelTA news agency reported.
“Our cooperation is developing quite well. I am happy with this, but we need to move forward. We are eyeing the Afghan market. We would like to talk to representatives of your business who trade with this country. It would be great to meet and discuss how to engage in trade, so that our economic entities get an understanding of the Afghan market and prices. Then we will be able to localize production in Tajikistan and move on to the Afghan market,” Turchin said.
Ambassador Hakdod assured the governor that there will be no problems with this. “I am sure that we will be able to implement this project. We have good relations with Afghanistan, we listen to and understand each other. For example, our peoples trade in the border areas: Afghans offer hand-made items, we supply mostly food products,” the ambassador said.
He also stressed that Tajikistan is interested in Belarus' experience in various fields. “They include agriculture, manufacturing, and training of personnel. Areas of cooperation are many. We should use the untapped potential,” the Tajik ambassador said.
In 2019, trade between the Minsk Oblast and Tajikistan amounted to over $6.1 million, with Minsk Oblast exports at more than $6 million. The Minsk Oblast imported cotton fiber, dried fruit and nuts from Tajikistan.
