Bishkek, Feb. 23 / Kabar /. An event dedicated to the International Mother Language Day is held in Bishkek on Wednesday in one of the culture houses, the press service of the Bishkek Mayor's Office reports.
An interesting concert with the participation of the People’s Assembly of Kyrgyzstan was organized for schoolchildren of the capital city. During the concert the folk and popular songs in Kyrgyz, Russian, Tatar and Ukrainian languages were sung, an excerpt from Manas epic was narrated for the first time in Ukrainian.
The International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO on November 17, 1999. This day has been celebrated since 2000 annually on 21 February to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Languages are the most powerful tools for preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. According to UNESCO’s estimates, the half of out of 6000 languages of the world may soon lose the last speakers.
