Bishkek, June 17, 2021 . / Kabar /. The ecological situation in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek is worsened, say Kyrgyz ecologists. The effect of smog in the city during the heating season and the situation on the waste landfill located in the northern part of the city on the ecology prove it.
The existing landfill in Bishkek was designed to be commissioned for only 15 years, but it has been operating for 49 years. To solve this problem, the project “Improving the solid waste management system in Bishkek” was signed in 2013, and ratified in 2015 by the Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic. However, the implementation of this project began only this year.
According to head of the Bishkek Sanitary Landfill Municipal Enterprise Adil Nazarov, the contractors of the company from Estonia are planning to construct a new landfill in the city (BSWM-5) worth EUR 7.5 million.
“First of all, we need to separate our food waste. On average, the city generates about 300 tons of food waste every day. This is a very useful organic fertilizer and it is 3-4 times stronger than ordinary manure. Organic agriculture is developing in the world. We are now planning to construct a waste sorting plant (BSWM-6) for EUR 6.5 million. But it doesn't solve the problem. We need a full-fledged plant. We can construct a full-plant for these EUR 6.5 million,” he said.
Junior Environmental Engineer Akzhol Akjigit uulu told about the culture of waste sorting and a standardized waste management system using the example of Kumtor.
“Kumtor produces on average 1 ton of food waste per day. There are 3 types of waste - household, industrial and hazardous. Collecting food waste and dumping it in a landfill is incorrect. Food waste and other wastes being separated in the kitchen,” Akjigit uulu said.
