Bishkek hosts int’l conference on eradication torture

Bishkek, June 26, 2019. /Kabar/. The International Conference “Kyrgyzstan on the way to the elimination torture: problems, achievements and prospects” dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the 7th anniversary of the establishment of the National Centre for the Prevention of Torture (NCPT) and the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is held in Bishkek as part of the “26 days against torture” campaign, which has started on June 1.

Nurdin Sulaimanov, the Director of the NCPT said the situation of torture in the country is close to critical, despite the efforts of civil society and the public sector.

“Changing the consciousness of those, who conducts the torture and fundamentally changing personnel policy is one of the main solutions to the problem. I think we will definitely find a solution to the problem,” Sulaimanov said.

The NCPT director also noted that as of today, the number of cases of torture in temporary detention facilities and departments of internal affairs has decreased be several times.
