Bishkek hosts round table dedicated to World Water Day

Established by the UN in 1993, World Water Day is held annually on March 22. This day emphasizes the importance of water as a precious natural resource.

On this day, the Institute of Water Problems and Hydropower of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic hosted a round table “Water and energy resources of Kyrgyzstan in the context of climate change and anthropogenic pressure”, dedicated to World Water Day and timed to the Year of Protection of Mountain Ecosystems and Climate Resilience.

At the round table the topical problems of water resources of mountainous countries in the context of a changing climate and increasing anthropogenic pressure are discussed, experience is exchanged on studying the impact of glacier degradation on the water resources of Central Asia, development of practical measures to introduce innovative technologies and methods of managing transboundary water resources and assess the hydropower potential of mountain rivers in a changing climate.

Director of the Institute of Water Problems and Hydropower of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic Chontoeva noted that more than 50 specialists on various water problems in the country take part in the round table. As a result of the round table, a resolution will be adopted.

“More than 10 reports were heard at the round table, which will subsequently be published in the journal Science, New Technologies and Innovations of Kyrgyzstan,” said Tolkunbek Asykulov, director of the branch of the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU) in the Kyrgyz Republic.

The participants of the round table noted the need for further development of cooperation between scientific and public organizations in the field of research on the water resources of Kyrgyzstan in a changing climate and the development of recommendations for the protection of mountain ecosystems using modern scientific methods.
