Bishkek, Sept. 27, 2021 . / Kabar / . The Kyrgyz capital city of Bishkek will host on Sept. 29 an international Kyrgyz kurosh (wrestling) tournament, President of the Kyrgyz Wrestling Federation for Chui Oblast and Bishkek Emil Zhamgyrchiyev told during a press conference at Kabar News Agency Monday.
He added the tournament will take place at the Kozhomkul Sports Palace and is timed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the country's independence.
"About 500 domestic athletes and wrestlers from Central Asian countries, namely Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran and others, are expected to participate in the tournament," Zhamgyrchiyev said.
The sporting event will be attended by winners of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: Aisuluu Tynybekova, Akzhol Makhmudov and Meerim Zhumanazarova.
Kyrgyz wrestling is one of the oldest national belt wrestling games of the Kyrgyz people.
Wrestlers wear special green or blue jackets, with white trousers and red belts. At the start, wrestlers rest their heads on the opponent’s shoulder, and then bend forward and grab the opponent’s belt with both hands, putting left hands over right. The main part of the match is held in standing position, and the goal is to pin the opponent down by holding his belt.
