Bishkek, March 9, 2022 / Kabar /. The signing ceremony of an agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan represented by Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on the Green Climate Fund (GCF) project “Carbon sequestration through climate investments in forests and pastures in the Kyrgyz Republic (CS-FOR)” was held in Bishkek on Wednesday. The project was approved at the GCF board meeting on November 14, 2019 in Songdo, South Korea.
The press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan said that this agreement is one of the main steps towards the implementation of the project, for which the GCF allocates grant funds to Kyrgyzstan in the amount of USD 30 million.
The project itself will be aimed at supporting the diversification of rural income sources, taking into account climate-oriented approaches in agriculture and forestry.
“Taking into account the growing political attention to forests and the adopted Declaration of the Glasgow leaders on forests and land use at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the initiative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov on the conservation and development of mountain forest ecosystems, I hope that this project will make a certain contribution to the implementation of the National Development Program of the Kyrgyz Republic until 2026,” said the Minister of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic Askarbek Dzhanybekov.
FAO Sub-Regional Coordinator for CA and Acting FAO Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Viorel Gutu, in turn, thanked the ministry and all partners for the fruitful cooperation and the results that have been achieved to date.
“There are still steps to make this project functional, but I am sure that we will be able to quickly pass them, because this project is really aimed at improving the lives of people in Kyrgyzstan and providing timely assistance to them,” he said.
