Bishkek, June 7, 2022. /Kabar/. The Cabinet of Ministers intends to launch the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1hydropower plant tomorrow, Chairman of the Cabinet Akylbek Zhaparov said during the forum "Migration and Development: prospects and new opportunities”.

He noted that Kyrgyzstan has certain opportunities to start construction of such a large HPP.

"Tomorrow, on June 8, we intend to start construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 HPP. We plan to prepare a general site for the entire construction, then build bridges and a tunnel. At the moment, $18.8 million are allocated from the budget for construction work. The first stage of construction will take 3 to 5 years. After 5 years, I hope we'll be able to start construction of the hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 640 megawatts," Zhaparov said.

In addition, the head of the Kyrgyz Cabinet noted that neighboring countries are also interested in this HPP.

“There is an interest from neighbors in the construction of the hydropower plant. But so far the parties have not come to any specific decisions. In this regard, not waiting for investors, we decided to start construction by our own forces," Zhaparov summed up.

The facility is to become the largest hydroelectric power plant in Kyrgyzstan, with a capacity of all 1,860 MW, annually.

Kambar-Ata-1 hydropower plant is expected to completely rid Kyrgyzstan of the need to import electricity, but on the contrary, allow exports.
