Construction of new Bishkek Sanitary Landfill, which was frozen due to COVID-19 pandemic, to be resumed

Bishkek, March 30, 2021 / Kabar /. The construction of a new sanitary landfill in Bishkek has been frozen due to the COVID-19 pandemic, director of the Bishkek Sanitary Landfill Adil Nazarov told at a press conference at Kabar Agency.

He said that the construction of a new landfill was planned within the framework of the project "Improving the solid waste management system in the capital". A contract was signed on March 28, 2017 with the Estonian contractor company "Ehitusfirma Rand Ja Tuulberg AS" in the amount of EUR 7 million 276 thousand 529.

“During 2017, the contractor completed the mobilization stage. The project was planned to be commissioned in May this year,” he added.

The director also pointed out that during 2019, the work was carried out to prepare the infrastructure, a cell for the disposal of waste with a volume of 45 thousand 757 square meters was dug at the facilities of the sanitary landfill. Also, the work was completed on the construction of the zero cycle of an administrative building, a checkpoint, a garage for equipment, planning work for internal structures and communications.

“However, in connection with the introduction of an emergency regime in the Kyrgyz Republic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as with the tightening of the travel regime in Bishkek, the contractor notified the project engineer and the customer that all work on the facility is temporary are stopped and he is evacuating foreign personnel,” Nazarov explained.

At the same time, he added that the contractor has now returned to the Kyrgyz Republic and construction will be continued soon.

It is specified that the area of ​​the new landfill is 9.5 hectares.

The contractor carried out additional topographic surveys in order to determine the actual boundaries of the landfill for household waste; a layer of stale waste and buried outside the boundaries of the landfill was revealed.

“The only problematic issue may be that due to the expansion of the territory of the existing solid waste dump by 3.8 hectares, an increase in the cost of the project is expected,” summed up Nazarov.
