Bishkek, Nov.27, 2019. /Kabar/. Wednesday, Kyrgyzstan’s capital city Bishkek hosted consultative workshop on air pollution in the country, organized by the State Agency for Environment Protection and Forestry (SAEPF) with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Kyrgyz Republic.
According to the Agency’s press service, the seminar was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Altynai Omurbekova, SAEPF Director Mirslav Amankulov, MPs, representatives of foreign embassies, international organizations, academia, civil society and the donor community, as well as the private sector.
"Improving air quality requires more active involvement of stakeholders to find innovative solutions. Therefore, today's workshop held by SAEPF will be a good platform for exchange of views of all stakeholders.
Much in this direction is being done by the Government, but more needs to be done. Improvement of the environmental situation in Bishkek is not only the work of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry and the Bishkek Mayor’s Office, every resident of the capital should be involved in this work,” the deputy PM said in her speech.
SAEPF Director Amankulov stressed the State Agency makes every effort to solve environmental problems.
“In order to improve the overall environmental situation in Bishkek, the Agency has developed in 2018 short-term Plan of Comprehensive Measures to Improve the Environmental Situation in Bishkek, which includes measures aimed at reducing air pollution in Bishkek. As part of the implementation of this plan, appropriate work is currently being carried out," he added.
The purpose of the workshop is to create a platform for stakeholders, including the Government, civil society, the private sector and the donor community, to map problematic and pressing air pollution issues, identify measures to accelerate progress and propose partnership and funding options that could translate the proposed plans into reality.
In November this year, the amount of emissions in Bishkek, polluting the air, departing from stationary sources per person has made 23.2 kg.
With the onset of the cold weather, the amount of exhaust gases of cars increases, the amount of which exceeds the norm, the townspeople begin to heat houses and baths with garbage and rubber. All this leads to air pollution in the capital, an increase in the air quality index.
