Bishkek, Oct. 30, 2018. /Kabar/. In Kyrgyzstan, the Decade on Snow Leopard Conservation, which took place on October 22-30 and was timed to the International Day of the Snow Leopard, completed its work.
The press service of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry reported that in accordance with Bishkek Declaration on the Conservation of the Snow Leopard adopted on October 23, 2013, 12 countries of the area mark the International Snow Leopard Day.
Within the decade, a photo exhibition and installations on the theme “’Save me!’ your nature”, an installation and a yurt “Eco Dom Barsa” (Russian: ЭкоДомБарса, lit.: eco home for snow leopard), display of videos and live filming of the snow leopard, performances, folklore concert, musical instruments, photo zone with sculpture and the 3D image of the leopard, a festive flash mob of environmentalists with students from city universities, speeches and reports, the play “Where are you, Donenbay bird?”, which is based on the works of Chyngyz Aitmatov, where the relationship between man and nature is told about. The main idea of the play is the harmonious coexistence of man with the animal world and the conflict that violates this harmony. The play recreates the problems associated with the conservation of wildlife.
Photo exhibitions and installations allowed visitors to dive into the world of the snow leopard's habitat and learn about the problems of biodiversity conservation, protection of rare and endangered representatives flora and fauna, including the snow leopard.
During the decade, the SAEPF and the UNDP staff held a number of informational meetings with local residents in Toktogul and Toguz-Torou regions, display of videos and theatrical performances with the participation of children, and also organized lectures at schools on the topic of conservation of the snow leopard and respect for the environment.
Director of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic (SAEPF) Abdykalyk Rustamov noted that the celebration of the Snow Leopard Day on October 23 on the fields of the 4th World Mountain Forum gave additional impetus to the intensification of global efforts to preserve the snow leopard population and the whole biodiversity.
Rustamov stressed that the snow leopards are ambassadors of high-mountain ecosystems, which embody majestic, mysterious and charismatic cats. Snow leopards for many Asian nations are a symbol of strength, nobility and power. Occupying the top level in ecosystems, it serves as a kind of flagship for the preservation of the entire living world of Central Asian highlands.
“This event on the Snow Leopard Day consolidated support for the idea of preserving and sustainable development of high-mountain ecosystems, one of the symbols of which is the snow leopard itself. Together we will be able to expand ties and strengthen interaction and promote the development of additional opportunities for the preservation of our invaluable natural heritage for future generations,” Rustamov added.
The decade dedicated to the International Snow Leopard Day was attended by ex-President of the Kyrgyz Republic Roza Otunbayeva, Deputy Head of the Governmental Office of the Kyrgyz Republic Murat Mukanbetov, as well as foreign delegations from 12 countries in the habitat of the animal included in the Red Book.
During the event, ex-President of the Kyrgyz Republic Otunbayeva received an award for her contribution to the preservation of the snow leopard from the German Union for Nature Conservation (NABU).
In her speech, she noted that the latest work of great Kyrgyz writer Chyngyz Aitmatov “When the Mountains Fall Down: The Eternal Bride” is dedicated to the snow leopard. “He warns us that if the leopards extinct, the mountains will fall on us. The works of Aitmatov are the best propaganda for the preservation of these wild animals,” she said.
