Bishkek, Oct.23, 2019. /Kabar/. Delegation of Kyrgyzstan, headed by Director of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic Mirslav Amankulov, took part in the 4th steering committee meeting of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP) in India.
The press service of the Agency for Environmental Protection reported that the meeting was chaired by India's Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar.
The meeting was attended by ministers representing 12 snow leopard range countries, senior government officials, technical experts and representatives of partner organizations
The meeting participants discuss conservation and sustainable economic development efforts in snow leopard habitats in 12 range states, efforts to combat poaching and illegal trade in wildlife, including snow leopards and associated wildlife, green economic development in snow leopard habitats and innovative conservation financing, the global snow leopard population assessment (PAWS) and further GSLEP plans.
In his report, Amankulov expressed confidence the celebration of Snow Leopard Day on Oct.23 on the margins of the 4th GSLEP meeting would give additional impetus to the global efforts to conserve the snow leopard population and biodiversity in general.
Key areas of work in all the snow leopard range countries were related to the implementation of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP), adopted in Bishkek in 2013 with the participation of 12 snow leopard range countries.
“If 15 years ago the snow leopard was on the verge of extinction, today we can proudly note its return,” the State Agency head said.
Amankulov also added for the first time Kyrgyzstan has developed a methodology for estimating the number of snow leopards, which is currently planned to be used to calculate the total number of snow leopards in the country.
In addition, Kyrgyzstan has developed a number of regulations to strengthen the protection of snow leopard and its food supply.
As part of the meeting, Mirslav Amankulov held a number of bilateral meetings with colleagues from 12 snow leopard range countries and discussed the prospects for further cooperation.
