Xinhua News Agency of China published an interview with Director of Kabar News Agency of Kyrgyzstan Mederbek Shermetaliev, dedicated to the Fifth World Media Summit in China. This forum was held from December 2 to 8, 2023.

- How many times have you taken part in the World Media Summit? How do you assess the role of this platform in promoting exchanges and cooperation between media in different countries and the potential for its development?

- This is my first time participating in the World Media Summit. But I know the history and creation of this international forum well and for a long time. The Summit, since its inception in 2009, has grown into an important platform promoting global media communication, exchange and cooperation. Today's event, attended by more than 400 people, aims to enhance practical cooperation and overcome geographical and ideological boundaries.

The World Media Summit is not just a platform for conversation, but a change force. It will play an important role in shaping the trajectory of global media transformation, adapting to the whirlwind of new technologies and combating disinformation. After all, today we see that part of the global media industry is in crisis and often abuses fakes. This creates certain information threats. Therefore, we need to work together on information support and promotion of important projects. And I think that the Fifth World Media Summit will be productive and become exactly the platform where we can fruitfully solve global media problems.

- The theme of the World Media Summit 2023 is “Boosting Global Confidence, Promoting Media Development.” What is the significance of international exchanges and cooperation in the field of media for the countries themselves and for global development?

- Of course, such significant forums help strengthen contacts and establish mutual exchanges. This is important because within the framework of the One Belt, One Road Initiative we need to build a common information space, unite different cultures and peoples, support the aspiration for a new world, fair and reasonable coexistence, development and prosperity. In my opinion, this is one of the main tasks of the media.

This aspect of collaboration needs to be given serious attention. The Belt and Road countries can set their own agenda, set priorities and resolve any issues. In many ways, this community of interests will be shaped by the media. Timely and truthful informing of the population in modern conditions is becoming increasingly important, since there are also those global media that are aimed at distorting the essence of the One Belt, One Road Initiative with the help of fakes. Therefore, it is important for us to strengthen cooperation and mutual exchanges so that the information field contributes to the development and prosperity of our peoples.

- This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. What do you think is the importance of the initiative for exchange and cross-fertilization between different civilizations, and what impact has it had on international media cooperation?

- The Belt and Road Initiative is a revival of the Great Silk Road. That is, by discovering something new, we can find interesting parallels in history. Since ancient times, our peoples have been united by caravan routes, trade has contributed to both cultural exchange and economic development in different parts of the Eurasian continent. Now our countries are faced with a more ambitious task - to create a large space for stable and confident development.

This is a global solution that involves the implementation of many large infrastructure projects to interface and synchronize large transport systems. The task of the media is precisely to reveal the creative essence and importance of those processes that were launched by the leader of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping and supported by the leaders and people of dozens of countries.

- What role, in your opinion, does humanitarian cooperation, including cooperation in the field of media, play in bringing people of different countries closer? How can the media skillfully narrate cooperation between countries and friendship between peoples?

- The humanitarian component is important for maintaining any relationship. Through mutual visits, artist tours, film screenings, exhibitions and festivals, we become closer and get to know each other’s culture and customs. This process needs to be supported and developed in every possible way. As for the media component, we all have something to work on together. As part of the One Belt, One Road Initiative, a large number of important projects have been initiated that have global prospects for the whole of Eurasia, aimed at many years to come.

Now we need to tell our citizens about the goals and objectives of a comprehensive strategic partnership in a broad and accessible way, in a simple and understandable language. It is necessary to inform the public in detail about the benefits that the implementation of major infrastructure projects will bring to each of the countries participating in the construction of the Belt and Road.

- How do you assess the level of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and China in the field of media? What are your expectations from the further development of bilateral cooperation in this area?

- Cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and China has reached the level of a strategic comprehensive partnership. This was achieved by the leaders of our countries, the respected President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping and the President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov.

In the media field, we have strong connections with Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily and several Chinese publishing houses, and are constantly trying to expand our circle of friends. We are open to cooperation, ready to establish information exchange, and participate in joint events.

We need to find and use different options for interaction in the media sphere. This could be some kind of television reports, educational materials, analytical reviews that can clearly demonstrate to citizens how ambitious the idea of One Belt, One Road is. We must even anticipate the positive changes that we will feel once we take the path of mutual respect, development and cooperation.
