ASHGABAT (TCA) — Drug use and addiction is again becoming a serious social problem in Turkmenistan, independent foreign-based news website Chronicles of Turkmenistan reports.
The report says that so-called “chars” and “atom” are the most widely spread narcotic substances. “Chars” is made from cannabis. Its price varies depending on the strength and costs 25 to 40 manats per dose.
One gram of “atom” based on Afghanistan’s heroin costs 95-100 manats whereas a single dose is sold at 60 manats.
Correspondents of Chronicles of Turkmenistan report that in the city of Kerki and the neighboring villages the number of personal property thefts from private farms has increased. Bicycles, chickens, ruminants, household equipment are missing. Thieves are young people, school graduates or addicted youths who have completed military service.
Having no opportunity to find employment and with plenty of free time, young people get together and use drugs as entertainment. In order to buy a new dose of drugs, they engage in thefts.
According to locals, the current situation reminds that of the late 1990s or early 2000s, when drug addiction was rampant in Turkmenistan.
In the city of Kerki many know the whereabouts of the drug dealing points of sale but they are not closed.
