EAEU regular summit in videoconference format

Bishkek, May 19, 2020 / Kabar/. President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov today took part in a regular meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (SEEC).

In his speech, the Kyrgyz President noted that under the current conditions, the free movement of goods within the EAEU has become relevant for food security, his press service reported.

He also drew attention to the issue of removing barriers in the internal customs territory of the Union. He emphasized that the existing mechanism for removing barriers is inefficient due to the lack of sufficient powers of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

Touching upon the issue of tariff setting for gas transportation, the President noted that when developing a draft international treaty, it is necessary to provide non-discriminatory approaches to setting tariffs for gas transportation regardless of the country of origin.

Sooronbay Jeenbekov also proposed to intensify work on the adoption of joint measures to support the economies and business of the EAEU member states, taking into account the post-crisis development and an important issue during this difficult time, called to support of citizens located in other countries of the Union.

The President also spoke in favor of strengthening the role of the Eurasian Economic Commission, stressing that in order to effectively fulfill the tasks set to remove barriers in the domestic market, the powers of the Commission and the EAEU Court should be strengthened.

Jeenbekov called the EAEU Digital Agenda an important aspect of cooperation, the implementation of which is proceeding at a very slow pace. He drew attention to the fact that the ongoing initiatives to digitalize industrial cooperation, create digital traceability of goods, the electronic labor exchange, and also develop digital transport corridors have not yet been implemented.

Following the meeting, a number of documents were adopted aimed at further deepening the Eurasian integration of the Union member countries:

The session of the SEEC was held today, May 19, in the mode of videoconference. SEEC members are the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia and the Prime Minister of Armenia.

The President of Moldova also attended the meeting as the head of the observer country.
