Bishkek, Oct.29, 2019. /Kabar/. In 2020, Kyrgyzstan will start implementation of the project on irrigation in Chui Oblast in the amount of $ 50 million at the expense of financing of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Neil McKain, EBRD Director for Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan told reporters.
He said in May President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov met with EBRD Head Suma Chakrabarti . During the meeting the sides discussed the upcoming priority projects for implementation.
Neil McKein noted the Bank has already implemented projects at the state level. In particular, it is a question of improving water supply.
“We have improved the water supply for 2 million people. This is an achievement of donors and the state. But it is not enough, we want to do more. The first step is to conduct more water supply in other regions,” he said.
In addition, the EBRD intends to pay attention to water quality and irrigation projects in oblasts.
“There is another project, which is expected to be signed early next year. This is new irrigation network in the Chui Valley. This is a major project for Kyrgyzstan because usually our projects are worth $5-6 million, and this project is worth $50 million,” McKain added.
The total amount for water supply is $100 million.
Also, the head of the EBRD in Kyrgyzstan said 19 projects were financed in the country in 2019 and five more are planned.
