Bishkek, Nov. 15, 2018. /Kabar/. For the first time in the country, a plan is being discussed for the introduction of cochlear implantation in the country as a way to combat deafness, Director of the National Maternal Health Center Kamchybek Uzakbaev told during a press conference at the Kabar News Agency.

He said that about 155 thousand children are born in the country per year, of which 27 thousand 450 are children with disabilities, this is a huge amount. Of these, some are children with hearing problems.

“According to the world statistics, in Kyrgyzstan between 0.5% and 1% of children with hearing problems are born per 1 thousand live-born children. In ten years, thousands of such children will be born, and they need special schools and living conditions. The implantation operation costs a lot of money, for example, 1 cochlear implant costs from 25 to 45 thousand euros, and, in addition, you also need to pay for the operation,” Uzakbaev said.

Director said that the Lenhart international fund volunteered to help.

“This year we signed a memorandum on improving hearing for children. They brought 8 implants worth about 150 thousand euros and it is free of charge. Such assistance may continue. Children's health is most valuable. They will raise the country's prpsects in the future,” Kamchybek Uzakbaev said.

He also noted that deafness is not a sentence. It can be “treated” and the sooner the better, since a cochlear implant will already be useless 10 years after the discovery or acquisition of a hearing disease. Special medical procedures allows you to detect hearing loss after 2-3 days after birth.

“In Kyrgyzstan, such procedures — neonatal screening are conducted in 3 medical institutions: the National Maternal Health Center, the city perinatal center of Bishkek and Osh. In this regard, the introduction and development of cochlear implantation in Kyrgyzstan is now being discussed,” the Director said.
