Bishkek, Oct. 10, 2024. /Kabar/. A delegation of the European Commission headed by Minister of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan Boobek Azhikeyev visited former uranium production facilities in Mailuu-Suu town in Jalal-Abad Oblast.
During the visit the delegation familiarized with the works financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where the Emergency Ministry of acts as a beneficiary, the ministry reported.
The works carried out should improve the environmental situation and increase safety both for local residents and neighboring countries.
Mailuu-Suu used to be one of the major uranium mining centers, but work on the deposits was stopped in 1968, leaving 23 radioactive tailings ponds and 13 mining dumps.
Over the decades, these sites have become sources of natural disasters such as landslides and floods, endangering human life and the ecology of the region.
In recent years Kyrgyzstan has made significant progress in stabilizing these hazardous sites.
The European Union has allocated more than EUR 40 million to support the reclamation of uranium sites in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, which was an important step to reduce environmental and sanitary risks.
