Brussels, Nov. 20, 2018. /Kabar/. The European Union hopes that donors will pay attention to the problems of uranium tailings in Central Asia, Special Representative of the European Union for Central Asia Peter Burian told at a briefing in Brussels.
He said that the European Union has allocated an additional 10 million euros to resolve the issue with uranium tailings.
The EU Representative added that they had already invested 16 million euros before. He noted that individual EU countries had promised to provide additional support. Belgium promised to provide more than 2 million euros. Others are preparing as well.
Burian added that in fact this problem is regional, and not only of the European Union.
The EU Representative continued by saying that they would like to draw the attention of donors to this problem. This is actually a thorny issue. The United States and Switzerland also intend to allocate funds. A great of money is needed. Only 7 million tailing dumps require 80 million euros, but should something happen, then a billion won’t be enough.
Peter Burian expressed the hope that other donors would respond in order to solve the problem together with partners.
