EU Special Representative for Central Asia Peter Burian arrives in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, June 1, 2021. / Kabar /. The European Union’s Special Representative (EUSR) for Central Asia, Ambassador Peter Burian, has arrived in Kyrgyzstan today as part of his final tour to the region, the Delegation of the European Union to the Kyrgyz Republic said.

During the visit, Peter Burian will hold bilateral meetings with senior Kyrgyz leadership, including President Sadyr Japarov, First Deputy Chairman of Cabinet of Ministers Aibek Dzhunushaliev, Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbayev and Chairwomen of the Central Election Committee Nurjan Shaildabekova.

The sides plan to discuss EU-Kyrgyz Republic cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, including bilateral as well as regional political dialogues and development cooperation. Current political processes in the Kyrgyz Republic, fight against Covid-19 pandemic, state of play in human rights and freedoms, investment and businesses climate and regional issues will also be discussed.

Along with the issues of bilateral cooperation, the EUSR for Central Asia will discuss progress, opportunities and challenges in implementation of the EU Strategy on Central Asia for strengthening resilience and prosperity, with focus on key priorities – rule of law, digitalisation, education, health, transition to green economies, and sustainable connectivity. Also important regional events for strengthening interregional cooperation – EU CA Economic Forum, EU CA Civil Society Forum will be spoken about.

In Bishkek, apart from bilateral meetings, EUSR Burian will meet with representatives of the local civil society and diplomatic community.

EUSR Burian will also visit Naryn region to meet with local authorities of Naryn city, EU funded project partners and beneficiaries He will pay a visit to University of Central Asia Naryn campus, where he will meet universities’ leadership and students.

This will be a final visit of Ambassador Burian to the Kyrgyz Republic in his capacity as the EU Special Representative to Central Asia. His mandate ends on 1st of July this year.
