The Ministry of Health with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) are organizing the European Immunization Week 2022 (EIW) in Kyrgyzstan on May 11-18, Head of the Public Health Department Ainura Akmatova told during a press conference at Kabar News Agency.
She said that immunization activities will be aimed at covering hard-to-reach and remote areas, as well as unvaccinated populations with limited access to health services.
“During the EIW, visiting and mobile teams of health workers will be formed, who will organize a vaccination point right on the territory of new buildings and pastures, where free vaccination will be provided. In addition, following an outbreak of measles in the neighboring Tajikistan, during the EIW 2022 we will focus on vaccination against measles and take all necessary measures to prevent the entry of measles in the country,” Akmatova added.
Zhanara Bekenova, the WHO country office representative noted that vaccines are one of the most cost-effective health tools ever invented: every som spent on immunizing children generates a profit of up to KGS 3,000 (about USD 36).
In addition, Acting Head of of UNICEF's Communications Unit in Kyrgyzstan Sema Khosta said that in 20 years vaccines have saved more lives than any other medical innovation in history, which is a huge achievement.
"There are still children who miss vaccinations. Vaccines have been victims of their own success by reducing mortality, they have made disease invisible. Vaccines save the lives of up to three million children every year," she stressed.
