Bishkek, Jan. 27, 2021 / Kabar /. Former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Mukhammedkalyi Abylgaziev was detained on the facts of corruption and illegal enrichment, the press service of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.
Abylgaziev, being prime minister, against the interests of the state and citizens of the republic, unreasonably and in violation of national legislation, signed a government’s resolution, according to which Kumtor Gold Company CJSC was additionally provided with territories for exploration and gold mining.
As a result, the total area of the mine more than doubled and amounted to 26.3 thousand hectares, including several glaciers and a protected area.
It should be noted that there was a government’s resolution, which banned the expansion of the area of the specified mine in order to preserve unique natural complexes, biological, landscape diversity and species of flora and fauna listed in the Red Book.
The development of these territories will lead to severe environmental consequences for the flora and fauna of the Issyk-Kul biosphere zone, and may also disrupt the country's hydropower system.
In addition, Abylgaziev, while in the civil service, illegally increased his assets, several times exceeding his official income. In order to legalize them, he acquired expensive objects of movable and immovable property in the territory of Bishkek, Chui and Issyk-Kul regions, and also made financial investments in the construction of multi-apartment elite houses. To avoid criminal liability, these assets were registered in the name of dummies.
On January 26, 2021, within the framework of pre-trial proceedings, Abylgaziev was detained and placed in the temporary detention facility of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic.
An investigation is underway.
