Bishkek, Jan. 31, 2023. /Kabar/. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) appreciated the efforts of Kyrgyzstan to improve the nutrition of schoolchildren.

Deputy Director of the FAO Food and Nutrition Division Nancy Aburto arrived in Kyrgyzstan with a short-term visit. One of the main objectives of her trip was to discuss the development of cooperation between FAO and the Kyrgyz Republic in the field of nutrition.

The organization noted that school meals make up an essential part of the daily diet of children in Kyrgyzstan and it is vital that it contributes directly to meeting their needs for essential vitamins and microelements.

Nancy Aburto was interested in the experience of Kyrgyzstan in designing school canteen menus that take into account not only the nutritional requirements of children, but also local traditions, preferences and food availability in the region, as well as the current practice of taking daily samples for calorie content and food safety compliance.

“We highly appreciate the efforts of Kyrgyzstan to improve the diet of school-age children. FAO plans to continue to support governments and institutions to ensure healthier school meals for children and adolescents, a step forward in realizing their right to food,” Nancy Aburto said.
