Bishkek, Nov. 19, 2020 / Kabar /. Ten secondary students and eight university students who were selected as best from among over 700 contestants from around Kyrgyzstan will compete for a chance to win the 2020 American Song Contest, Friday, November 20. The Song Contest will be broadcast live on TV1 Channel and YouTube at 17:00.
The Finale will be judged by an expert panel featuring a Ministry of Education official, professional singer Mirbek Atabekov, American performer Ben Wright from the musical group “Henhouse Prowlers,” and a U.S. Embassy official.
This year’s American Song Contest finalists competed among 600 students from 65 secondary schools of the Osh, Naryn, and Talas oblasts, and Bishkek City. One hundred university students from seven universities in Bishkek and Osh competed in regional contests before being selected to compete in the finale. Song Contest singers learn and perform songs by U.S. artists for expert judges at the regional and oblast level for the chance to compete in the national competition.
Since 2014, the U.S. Embassy has hosted the American Song Contest each year, in partnership with Sun People, to help secondary school and university students master English language skills and learn more about U.S. art and culture by learning and singing an English language song by a U.S. artist. This year’s contest will be the first virtual contest featuring student performer music videos. To protect contestants, judges, and technical staff from the pandemic, contestants recorded professional quality music videos which will be broadcast for judges and viewers as the contestants watch from studios located throughout the Kyrgyz Republic. Judges will view videos via an online platform, as they participate from different locations throughout the Kyrgyz Republic and United States.
