Bishkek, Feb. 24, 2021 / Kabar /. The first municipal crisis center "Ayalzat" for women with children who suffered from domestic violence has been opened in Bishkek, the Mayor's Office of the capital city reported.
The center will provide consultative, psychological, legal and medical assistance. The staff of the center will help with paperwork, accompany in courtrooms and in law enforcement agencies. Also, with the support of international donors and experts, various programs will be carried out to support families in difficult life situations, the report said.
The crisis center is designed for 60 places, one mother + children per person. The temporary shelter will be funded by the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Kyrgyz Republic. The center was opened at the initiative of the Bishkek Mayor's Office as part of the work to promote gender equality and eliminate gender discrimination and protect the rights of women, girls and children, the report said.
According to statistics of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Kyrgyz Republic, 6,145 cases of domestic violence were recorded in 2019. In more than 90% of cases, the victims are women.
First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development of Kyrgyzstan Aliza Soltonbekova said that today the state policy is aimed at the formation of family values. “The crisis center will focus more on strengthening families so that families can be reunited. Here, within the framework of correctional programs, work will be carried out not only with victims of domestic violence, but also to change the violent behavior of perpetrators of domestic violence. The ministry will finance and assist the crisis center to provide assistance to victims of domestic violence throughout the republic. It is also planned to open a crisis center in Osh,” the deputy minister said.
There are about 17 crisis centers in Kyrgyzstan, all of them are financed by non-governmental, non-profit organizations and private companies.
