First training course on food safety will be conducted for representatives of ministries and institutions responsible for sustainable development, as well as the civil sector and universities of the Kyrgyz Republic, the UN FAO Representation Office in Kyrgyzstan reported.
The curriculum “Improving the National Food Security System of the Kyrgyz Republic” was jointly developed by experts of the Eurasian Center for Food Safety of Moscow State University named after Lomonosov and Kyrgyz experts on the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Industry and Melioration of the Kyrgyz Republic, with the technical support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations World Food Program (UN WFP).
The 4-day intensive training includes a review of the concept of food safety, an analysis of the current state and trends of food safety in the world, Eurasia and, in particular, in Kyrgyzstan. Participants will also explore different approaches to managing critical aspects of food safety, food safety risks, and how to prevent them.
“Achieving sustainable food safety is one of the top priorities of the national development program ‘Trust. Unity. Creation’”, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Food Industry and Melioration of the Kyrgyz Republic Erkin Choduev stressed. “Its effective and timely implementation largely depends on our professional competencies, which is why we intend to constantly increase our potential and develop professional approaches, including through special training programs.”
During the course of training, participants will explore approaches to addressing such strategic tasks as ensuring the availability of food in the country through the development of the agro-industrial complex and regulating the import and export of food products. In addition, participants will explore the possibilities of ensuring the affordability of food, especially for vulnerable segments of the population, and issues of quality, diversity and food safety.
Program participants will also explore the possibilities and tools for monitoring and evaluating food security at the national and regional levels for a comprehensive analysis of food safety and forecasting its dynamics in order to develop appropriate strategies.
FAO Representative Dorjee Kinlay and WFP Country Director Andrea Bagnoli told that FAO and WFP are ready to provide the necessary support to strengthen the capacity of state institutions at the central and local levels to comprehensively manage food safety issues and develop coherent intersectoral policies and programs. This training program will help strengthen management capacity and deepen comprehensive understanding of food safety and nutrition in the country and its development priorities.
The curriculum was developed with the financial support of the Russian Federation in the framework of the WFP Country Strategic Plan for 2018-2022. The course is realized with the financial support of the Russian Federation in the framework of the FAO UN project “Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in the Caucasus and Central Asia and FAO / EU FIRST programs.
