Bishkek, Nov.18, 2019. /Kabar/. The 40th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO is taking place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on Nov. 12- 27. The Session is attended by a delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic, headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Chingiz Aidarbekov.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kyrgyzstan’s delegation also includes Executive Secretary of the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO Sabira Soltongeldiyeva, Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism Azamat Jamakulov, and representatives of UNESCO Associated Schools in the Kyrgyz Republic.
On Nov.18 FM Aidarbekov addressed the General Policy Debate of the General Conference, where he emphasized the special role of UNESCO, given its broad mandate, in the achievement of sustainable development goals by member states until 2030.
He noted Kyrgyzstan is currently working on the preparation of the Voluntary National Reviews of Sustainable Development Goals 2030, which will be presented to the ECOSOC in 2020.
Chingiz Aidarbekov told about the achievements and priorities of the country in the spheres of education, science and culture, as well as gender equality and fight against climate change, highlighting the importance of solving the problem of glacier melting, rational water resources management and preservation of mountain ecosystems.
In this regard, the Kyrgyz FM noted the recent ratification of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change by the Kyrgyz Republic and requested UNESCO member states to support international initiatives of Kyrgyzstan to expand the Mountain Partnership, conserve the snow leopard, protect mountain ecosystems, as well as the problem of glacier melting.
Besides, the Kyrgyz delegation head noted Kyrgyzstan for the first time had put forward its candidature to participate in the elections to the Executive Board of UNESCO for the period 2019-2023, assuring that, if elected, the country intends to make active efforts to enhance the role of UNESCO, as well as to develop cooperation with the Organization as a whole and with member states.

Its declared purpose is to contribute to promoting international collaboration in education, sciences, and culture in order to increase universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the United Nations Charter.
UNESCO has 193 member states and 11 associate members.
