Bishkek, Feb. 11, 2020 / Kabar /. Lately, the frozen lake of Ara-Kol is becoming very popular in Kyrgyzstan among tourists. Many tourist companies offer one-day trips to Ara-Kol.
The lake is situated in Kochkor region of Naryn Oblast, which is in the east of the country.
Actually, it was built in 1958 as water reservoir and later in 1985 it was increased. The only river flows into the lake. The water of the reservoir is used for irrigation.
Both in winter and summer time local people fish there. There are five kinds of fishes.

The lake is very beautiful during winter time, when its frozen.
Usually, ice on Ara-Kol is compared with ice on Baikal, which freezes in winter. It shimmers from emerald to dark blue, and cracks are visible deep from the surface.
In spite the fact that there is no snow in Kochkor region, its very windy and chilly and the water freezes.
Local people said that the ice thickness on Ara-Kol reaches 50-60 centimeters.
The water of the lake freezes in December and melts in February. This period of time is always holiday for locals, especially for children.

Tourists came to see and enjoy the beauty of the lake not only from Kyrgyzstan, but from other countries too.
But, many tourists visit the lake mainly in winter, though it is a picturesque place in summer as well.
Tourists can skate, ride on horses and so on.
