Gender-based violence is a phenomenon that does not have national borders – Vice Prime Minister Omurbekova

Bishkek, Nov. 5, 2018. /Kabar/. Kyrgyzstan was one of the first countries in the region to adopt the Law on Social and Legal Protection against Domestic Violence, Vice Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Altynay Omurbekova told at the sub-regional conference on “From Political Decisions to Actions. Eliminating Gender-Based Violence against Women and Girls in Central Asia.”

In her opinion, by adopting the law, Kyrgyzstan recognized domestic violence as a dangerous and unacceptable phenomenon that must be combated on all fronts.

“Gender-based violence is a phenomenon that does not have national borders that people can be exposed to regardless of gender, age, place of residence, education, property status, social status and other socio-demographic differences,” Omurbekova said.

She also noted that the new criminal procedure code, which is coming into force on January 1, toughens punishment for crimes against women and girls.
