Bishkek, Oct. 23, 2018. /Kabar/. Glacier areas in Afghanistan have decreased by 13% in recent years, Director General of the Natural Resource Management of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Afghanistan Qazizada told at the Mountain Forum 2018 in Bishkek.
He said that decades of conflict have had an impact on Afghanistan.
“For example, the famous forest of pistachios in the territory of Afghanistan is not the same as it was before the war. Afghanistan is also a mountainous country. We also have many large rivers, which we are talking about. It is important to emphasize that Afghanistan does not rank first place in the amount of water per person. Climate change affects the environment, affects agriculture, livestock and ecosystem support. Ecosystems are sensitive to climate change issues,” he said.
Qazizada noted that due to climate change in recent years, glacier areas in Afghanistan have decreased by 13%.
“This is an important question regarding the future of the mountains and its influence. This suggests that we need to discuss cooperation. This is all a priority for us. There is a need to find a solution. Because global change in climate, environment can affect all people. These processes have no borders, nationality, etc.,” he added.
Qazizada stressed that the air temperature in Afghanistan has changed by 1.5 degrees.
