Government of Kyrgyzstan holds meeting on environmental security

Bishkek, March 25, 2021 . / Kabar / . First Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Artem Novikov held a meeting on environmental security, the press service of the Kyrgyz Government said on Thursday.

"On March 19, 2021, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov signed a decree on measures to ensure environmental security and climate sustainability. The Decree prescribes mechanisms and principles to improve the environmental situation, waste recycling, increase the area of green spaces, and address uranium legacy issues.

In addition, the document states the preparation of comprehensive plans to improve the environmental situation in all regions of the country. State bodies should submit by Apr. 20 a specific plan of action to implement the Presidential Decree with the identification of sources of funding and mechanisms for its implementation. In this regard, environmental safety cannot be considered a secondary task," Artem Novikov said.

He also recalled the annual problem with smog in winter.

"This situation is repeated every year, and we are reminded of it only in winter. the Government action plan for the next three years to improve the environmental situation in the capital was approved in January 2021. After additional consultations with public organizations and eco-activists, we agreed to finalize a corresponding action plan and implement a number of key tasks. Already by Apr. 1, the plan should be approved and its practical implementation will begin” the first deputy prime minister noted.

During the meeting, Artem Novikov stressed that by Sept. 1, 2021 the landfill in Bishkek must be completely closed and relocated, reclamation should be carried out on an area of 35 hectares.

In addition, preparatory work should begin to organize a park and ethno-complex on the territory of Boz-Boltok with an area of 60 hectares. The plan also includes measures to gasify new buildings, convert boilers to gas, and regulate construction standards and regulations with respect to environmental principles.
