Head of Kyrgyz Cabinet and vice president of EBRD discuss current development of joint projects

Bishkek, Feb. 29, 2024. /Kabar/. Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers - Head of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic Akylbek Zhaparov held a meeting with Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Mark Bowman.

During the meeting, the parties discussed priority issues of cooperation in the field of hydropower, agriculture, tourism, water resources, transport, light industry, etc.

The parties paid special attention to cooperation in the energy sector.

The head of the Cabinet of Ministers noted that the issues of “energy security and energy efficiency have become one of the most relevant and pressing not only in our country, but also in the global space.”

In this context, the chairman of the Cabinet said that the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 hydroelectric power station will increase the volume of the reservoir and significantly increase the amount of electricity generated.

“Currently, preliminary agreements have been reached on financing this project with international financial institutions,” said the head of the Cabinet.

He further drew his interlocutor’s attention to projects in the field of irrigation and agriculture, noting that “investments in this sector will cover the construction of reservoirs, the restoration and modernization of head irrigation structures, main and secondary canals, and on-farm structures.”

In turn, the EBRD vice president said that 2023 was a very successful year for the EBRD’s cooperation with Kyrgyzstan and expressed his readiness to support all projects of mutual interest.

In addition, he told the head of the Cabinet about the current state and implementation of joint projects in the field of renewable energy sources, restoration and rehabilitation of energy facilities and added that the EBRD considers energy as one of the priority areas of cooperation.

Following the meeting, a ceremony was held to sign a memorandum between Kyrgyzstan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on mutual understanding regarding support for the development of renewable energy sources in the Kyrgyz Republic.
