IFAD mission positively assessed implementation of “Livestock and Market Development Project - 2”

Bishkek, Nov.20, 2019 /Kabar/. The mission of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) positively assessed the implementation of the “Livestock and Market Development Project - 2” (LMDP-2).

The mission was comprised of: Anara Jumabaeva, leading economist, Oliver Mundi, environment and climate specialist, Ben Norton, pasture and livestock management specialist, Zholdoshbek Dadybaev, veterinary specialist and Nino Gogsadze, procurement specialist. The mission was accompanied by Michael Kauttu, the IFAD Country Program Manager in the Kyrgyz Republic.

The project started in 2014, and will be completed in 2020 covers Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken oblasts. The total cost of the project is $ 39.5 million.

Expected results:

(i) more productive and affordable pastures; increased forage available to livestock;

(ii) healthier livestock with reduced mortality;

(iii) marketing partnership in the milk value chain that stimulates productivity.

The main implementing agencies are the Agricultural Project Implementation Unit (APIU) and ARIS .

In the course of their work, the mission members met with the heads of the ministries and discussed the current achievements and problematic aspects of the Project. They also visited the regions to get acquainted with the project activities on veterinary medicine and pasture management, met with representatives of local authorities, Pasture Users Unions (PUU), private veterinary services, and with women's groups that carry out their economic activities in agriculture.

Based on the results of its work, the mission provided the Aide-memoire with recommendations on improvement of the project work, adjusting activities and implementation mechanisms for the remaining period.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is a specialized agency of the UN. The Kyrgyz Republic joined IFAD in 1996.

Currently, two IFAD funded projects are being implemented: “Livestock and Market Development Project - 2” (2013-2019) and “Access to Markets Project” (2108-2023). The “Livestock and Market Development Project - 1” was completed on September 30, 2019. The design of a new project is being developed with the working title “Resilient Pastoral Livelihoods Projects” with an expected begin date in 2020. The FAO Investment Center has assisted in the design and support of projects implementation.
